Item upgrades allow players to increase the item level of equippable items such as weapons, armor, and trinkets up to a certain amount. You can upgrade items at any NPC that accepts the appropriate currency.

Upgrade components are slotted into equipment to give attributes bonuses and other effects. These are usually slot-restricted but there are some universal upgrades.

Rerolling

Glyphs are the exception, which can be salvaged with the Black Lion Salvage Kit or Ascended Salvage Tool.

Based on the type of item, upgrading an item could cost Dilithium or gold. Some upgrades also require Flightstones or crests. The number of crests and Flightstones needed to upgrade an item depends on the gear's level, and a maximum upgrade level is established by Blizzard.
