About Toto

The band Toto was formed in the year 1976 by guitarists Jeff Porcaro and David Paich (who were also acclaimed studio musicians who worked with Boz Scaggs at the time) and singer/bassist Bobby Kimball. Their name is derived from the Latin word which means "all all-encompassing," the group was intent on exploring every musical style.

In 1981 the third album by Toto Turn Back was a flop, but they rebound with their fourth album Isolation which contains two hits, including the title track and Roseanna. The album and their tour established them as a brand around the world.

After a gap of couple of years, Toto return with the album Fahrenheit in the year 1986. It's a change from the ballads of their previous albums and includes some heavy rock. The album was their first album to go platinum in North America.

During the recording process of the fifth album, the group loses its manager and faces financial challenges. They decide to change their name and record a new album with the new producer. The lead vocalist Fergie Frederiksen departs and is replaced by Joseph Williams, son of legendary film composer John Williams and 1950s actress Barbara Ruick. Joseph Williams is a natural frontman and provides the band with a much-needed boost.

In 1999, the band release Mindfields and embarks on an extensive worldwide tour. After a few months in Europe they head to Japan where the shows are sold out. After a short hiatus, Toto resumes their recording and release their first live album titled Absolutely Live in 1993. It also features a cover of Weezer’s song Hash Pipe as a response to the band's performance in Africa on their recent tour. Toto's touring band is rounded out by drummer Lenny Castro, bassist Shannon Forrest and keyboardist Shem von Schroeck.

The album was a return to their best form and the tour that went with it featured sold-out shows in North America and Europe. The reunion of Toto gathered momentum after the return of bassist Shem Von Schroeck and guitarist Steve Lukather.
